Spain Gets Another Total Solar Eclipse in 2027 — This Time in the South

August 2, 2027 will bring another total solar eclipse to Spain — and The Fin Whale Eclipse Project is already looking ahead.

After an unforgettable 2026 eclipse that crossed northern Spain and the Balearic Islands, the Moon’s shadow will return to the Iberian Peninsula less than a year later.

This time, southern Spain takes centre stage.

On Monday, August 2, 2027, the path of totality will travel across the Strait of Gibraltar, covering almost the entire province of Cádiz, much of Málaga, the southernmost portions of Granada and Almería, as well as Ceuta and Melilla. The rest of Spain will experience a partial solar eclipse.

A Very Different Eclipse From 2026

For those who joined us for the 2026 eclipse, one of the most dramatic parts of the experience was its timing.

The August 12, 2026 eclipse reached totality in Spain late in the day, with the Sun low toward the western horizon.

2027 will be very different.

The eclipse will occur during the morning, with totality sweeping across southern Spain at approximately 10:45–10:50 a.m. The higher position of the Sun should make finding a viewing location considerably easier than it was for many people in 2026.

And depending on where you are, totality will last significantly longer.

Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional currently calculates approximately:

  • Cádiz: 2 minutes 54 seconds of totality
  • Málaga: 1 minute 48 seconds
  • Ceuta: 4 minutes 48 seconds
  • Melilla: 4 minutes 34 seconds

Around the Strait of Gibraltar, some locations will experience more than four minutes beneath the Moon's shadow. For example, Algeciras is expected to see approximately 4½ minutes of totality.

Spain Is Becoming Eclipse Country

What makes 2027 even more remarkable is that it comes immediately after the 2026 total solar eclipse.

Spain is in the middle of an extraordinary sequence of three major Iberian solar eclipses in 2026, 2027 and 2028.

For communities, schools, Scouts, families, astronomy groups and travellers, that creates an incredible opportunity to do more than simply watch the sky.

It is an opportunity to learn about our planet — and the connections between the Sun, Moon, Earth and oceans.

That is exactly where The Fin Whale Eclipse Project comes in.

Look Up. Then Look Down.

The Fin Whale Eclipse Project began with a simple idea:

Look up at something extraordinary happening in the sky — and use that moment to think about the extraordinary world below us.

In 2026, our project connected the total solar eclipse with the North Atlantic and the fin whales that travel through its waters.

In 2027, the geography changes.

The Moon's shadow will cross the Atlantic, reach the Strait of Gibraltar and sweep across southern Spain and North Africa.

But the idea behind our project remains the same.

The Sun and Moon affect the world we see above us. The Moon helps drive our tides. Those tides are part of an ocean system connecting countries, coastlines, wildlife and people thousands of kilometres apart.

A solar eclipse gives millions of us a reason to stop for a few minutes and look up.

We want to use those few minutes as a reason to look down at the ocean too.

Safe Viewing Still Comes First

Whether you are inside or outside the path of totality, proper solar viewing protection is essential.

During the partial phases before and after totality, viewers looking directly at the Sun should use proper solar eclipse glasses or another safe solar viewer meeting the applicable ISO 12312-2 requirements.

Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the Sun.

Only people who are actually within the path of totality may remove their eclipse glasses — and only during the brief period when the Moon completely covers the Sun's bright face. The moment any bright portion of the Sun begins to reappear, eye protection must go back on.

The Fin Whale Eclipse Project — 2027

Our 2026 project brought together young people, families, conservation organizations, schools, Scouts, communities and supporters from Canada and across Europe.

And we're not done yet.

Over the coming months, The Fin Whale Eclipse Project will be developing its plans for the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse, including new educational resources, partnerships and ways for young people and communities to participate.

Southern Spain will have its moment in the Moon's shadow.
